210 GB of free space on a PlayStation 5. That's the figure PlayStation Game Size, an account that tracks the PlayStation Network database, posted on X for GTA 6 this week, according to VGTimes. If it holds, the game will take up almost a third of the usable storage on a launch-model PS5.

One caveat before you start deleting things: neither Rockstar nor Sony has published an official size. The game's PlayStation Store page, as IBTimes UK checked, lists no storage requirement, and VGTimes doesn't explain how the tracker got the number. Treat it as a strong estimate, not a spec sheet.

200, 210 or 244 GB?

The new number didn't come out of nowhere. It's the latest in a string of figures that have been circulating for months, and they don't agree:

  • "Just under 200 GB" — the oldest estimate, credited to the GTA 6 Intel account. The original post dates from March 2024 and resurfaced in June 2026, as Upcomer noted.
  • 244.86 GB — a photo of a PlayStation screen posted to Reddit on September 19. IBTimes UK couldn't verify it, and the figure doesn't appear on Sony's store.
  • 210 GB — the PSN database figure PlayStation Game Size has just posted.
  • 150 to 300 GB — the range of fan guesses on forums, compiled by IBTimes UK.

Our read is that part of the gap may come down to what each number measures. Download size, installed size and the free space needed to install are usually different values, and the PS5 typically asks for some headroom beyond the final footprint. "Just under 200 GB" installed and "210 GB free" to start aren't necessarily contradictory. That's our hypothesis, not a confirmation.

What it means for each PS5

The capacity on the box is never what you get for games, since the system keeps a slice for itself. Using MiniTool's figures:

ModelAdvertisedFree for games (approx.)Share taken by 210 GB
Original PS5 / Slim Digital825 GB667 GB~31%
PS5 Slim with disc drive1 TB~842 GB~25%
PS5 Pro2 TB~1.84 TB~11%

The percentages are our own math. Anyone on an 825 GB PS5 with two or three big games installed (HotHardware puts a typical AAA release at 120 to 150 GB) will have to pick what goes.

For scale: Red Dead Redemption 2, Rockstar's previous game, needs 150 GB on PC, per HotHardware. The same outlet cites 190 GB for God of War Ragnarök and up to 240 GB for Call of Duty. At 210 GB, GTA 6 would sit above RDR2 but wouldn't be an all-time record.

What about the physical edition?

You're downloading too. IBTimes UK points out that the physical edition of GTA 6 contains a download code rather than a disc with the game on it. The box on your shelf saves you neither storage nor bandwidth.

How long the download takes

Preloading starts on November 12 for eligible digital purchases, a week ahead of the November 19 launch on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. That week exists for exactly this. Here's our math for 210 GB at a steady speed with no overhead — real-world times will always be longer:

  • 10 Mbps: about 47 hours
  • 50 Mbps: about 9.5 hours
  • 100 Mbps: about 4 hours 40 minutes
  • 300 Mbps: about 1.5 hours

If your connection is slow or your plan has a data cap, start on day one of the preload. A launch-day patch could also add a few more gigabytes on the 19th; nobody has said how big it is, or whether there is one.

If you run out of space

The PS5 takes an internal M.2 SSD, which is the only way to add space that can actually run PS5 games. Going by the specs MiniTool lists, it has to be an NVMe PCIe Gen4 drive (M.2, M key), 250 GB to 8 TB, ideally 5,500 MB/s sequential read or faster, and fitted with a heatsink. It goes in the internal expansion bay; the console then formats it and offers to move games across.

An external USB drive helps less: it can store PS5 games, but they have to be moved back to internal or M.2 storage to play. It works as a parking spot for other games so you don't have to redownload them later.

What nobody has confirmed

In the sources we read, three answers are missing:

  • The Xbox Series X|S size. None of the outlets gives a number for Microsoft's consoles. Series S owners, with the smallest drive of the generation, need it most.
  • Whether the 210 GB includes the day-one patch or the patch comes on top.
  • PC. Rockstar hasn't announced a PC version; reports point to 2027. Any PC storage figure right now is a guess.

Confirmation should show up on the PlayStation Store itself once preloading opens on November 12. Until then, clearing about 250 GB is the simplest way to avoid surprises — that's our recommendation, with room for a patch.
