On November 11, a ceremony in London will hand out the 2026 Golden Joystick Awards. Eight days later, on November 19, GTA 6 arrives on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. The arithmetic explains why the most anticipated game of the year appears in none of the 21 public-vote categories: by the time voting closes, at midnight London time on October 23, nobody will have played it.
The nominees went up on Friday (September 25). According to Dork, 007: First Light and Big Walk lead with six nominations each, with Resident Evil Requiem next on four. The "Most Wanted Game" category lists Alien: Isolation 2, Fable, Persona 6, The Witcher 4 and Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis. GTA 6 is not on that list, and it can't be voted for as game of the year either.
What the "Big 5" is, and why it matters here
US outlets have been framing this season as one where a sweep might happen. The Big 5 are the five awards that carry the most weight in the game-of-the-year race: the Golden Joysticks, The Game Awards, the DICE Awards, the Game Developers Choice Awards (GDC) and the BAFTA Games Awards. Per Game Rant and Gaming Pro Max, Baldur's Gate 3 and Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 took all five in a single cycle. Game Rant adds the counterexample: Red Dead Redemption 2, held by many as a masterpiece, won none of them as game of the year; God of War (2018) took four, and the fifth, the Golden Joysticks, went to Fortnite Battle Royale.
With the Joysticks out of reach, GTA 6's Big 5 is incomplete from the start. It can still, in theory, compete for the other four. Gaming Pro Max lists The Game Awards (December 2026) and the DICE, GDC and BAFTA awards (early 2027) as the ceremonies where it can still appear.
The Game Awards bottleneck
The sources we read disagree here, so it's worth separating them. VGTimes says nominations for The Game Awards 2026 close on November 20, one day after launch, and that the ceremony takes place on December 10 at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles. Game Rant, meanwhile, writes that eligibility dates "will be announced in fall 2026" and that historical cutoffs have tended to fall before GTA 6's release. So one outlet treats the deadline as settled and the other as still to be confirmed. In the sources we read, there's no statement from The Game Awards itself with this year's rule. Our reading: treat November 20 as likely, not certain.
If it holds, the margin is a single day, and any delay to the launch would knock the game out of the running. That ties into what we've already covered on the calendar: the official November 19 date and the staggered launch by time zone, which lets New Zealand play before everyone else.
What about the 2027 Golden Joysticks?
The game should be eligible for next year's Joysticks, according to Dork and Gaming Pro Max. Gaming Pro Max cautions that this depends on the 2027 rules and that, even if it happens, it wouldn't count toward a same-cycle sweep. We don't yet know the 2027 dates, and the organizers said nothing on it in the sources we read.

And for players in Brazil?
The awards are international and the Joystick vote is open to the public, so Brazilian readers can vote in the 21 categories until October 23. For GTA 6, which won't have Portuguese voice acting — the game will have subtitles only — awards season is one of the few areas where local fans carry little weight: Big 5 results are decided by juries and votes mostly from elsewhere.
A point in Rockstar's favor
The calendar also helps the company, in our reading. A game released on November 19 reaches juries with weeks to spare before the 2027 ceremonies, and doesn't have to compete with a whole season of fatigue. That's our argument, not something from the sources.
What nobody has confirmed
In the sources we read, there's no comment from Rockstar or Take-Two on awards, and no confirmation of The Game Awards deadline from the organizers. We also didn't check the full Golden Joystick nominee list beyond the categories mentioned above. We'll update when The Game Awards publishes its 2026 rules.
