"Yeah, you're going to see me in that." The line, dropped almost casually during an Associated Press interview about something else entirely, made Stephen Root the first actor to ever publicly confirm a role in GTA 6 — something Rockstar Games historically doesn't do, not even after a game ships. The studio's approach to voice casting for the most expensive movie-in-a-game ever made follows one rule: no cast list exists, and nobody talks.
Root, an Emmy winner best known as the voice of Bill Dauterive in King of the Hill, never actually named the character he plays. It was the press and fans who closed that loop, matching his distinctive timbre against lines already released: the character is believed to be Brian Heder, the veteran smuggler who shows up right at the start of GTA 6's second trailer, in a double meet-up with Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos. That distinction matters — Root confirmed he's in the game; the character's name is a voice-recognition deduction, not something he stated himself.
Why nobody had caught on before
The truth is people already had — that's exactly why Root finally admitted the role at all. In his own words: "I think from the first rollout of GTA that they were doing maybe almost a year ago, they had my character in there, and there are too many people who knew me from King of the Hill and my voice." In other words, the secret had already leaked through voice recognition the moment the first trailers dropped — Root simply put an official stamp on what a good chunk of the community already assumed.
Brian Heder, as Rockstar itself describes him in the game's own marketing material, is "a classic drug runner from the golden age of smuggling in the Keys" — a character closely tied to Jason, who still moves product through his own boatyard alongside his third wife, Lori. In exchange for help with criminal jobs, he lets Jason live rent-free on one of his properties. In the second trailer, it's his line that stuck with fans: "Just go get me my checks."
A rare confirmation, from a studio that confirms nothing
What makes this notable isn't just Heder's name — it's the fact that a confirmation exists at all. Rockstar has kept, for decades, a blanket policy of secrecy around its voice cast: it never publishes a credits list, never confirms who plays whom, even years after a game's release. Anyone who's played GTA V or Red Dead Redemption 2 knows a good part of the voice credits only surfaced years later, through fan digging or actors who decided to speak up on their own — exactly what Root just did.
That leaves an open question: if one actor confirmed, will others follow? So far, no. Protagonists Jason and Lucia remain without an officially announced voice actor (the names circulating are rumor, not confirmation), and Rockstar has shown no sign of changing its stance — Root's comment was entirely his own, not a studio plant.
Does this change anything for Brazil?
Here's the part that matters directly to players here: GTA VI will not get a Portuguese dub — Rockstar has confirmed only PT-BR subtitles, so Root's voice (or any other original cast member's) is exactly what Brazilian players will hear, with no local dub to compare it to (more in our earlier piece on the subtitles-only decision). In practice, the voice international outlets are now identifying is the same one that will reach the console of anyone who buys the game here — just read through subtitles rather than a national dub.
What's still unknown
In the sources we read, there's no official confirmation from Rockstar either of the character's name or of a broader cast list — everything beyond Root's own quote remains voice-recognition and community deduction. There's also no sign the studio plans to break its secrecy policy for the two protagonists before launch on November 19.
