With 16 days to go, the number that matters for PS5 players is no longer just how much free SSD space they have. According to PlayStation Game Size (@PlaystationSize), an account that tracks changes in the PlayStation Store database, GTA 6 now requires system software 14.22.00.00 or later — the very version Sony pushed out on Monday, November 2.

Neither Sony nor Rockstar has confirmed it. The claim comes from datamining, and VGTimes, which picked it up, says it should be treated as unofficial for now. The same outlet points out that the game's official page lists PS5 and Xbox Series X|S without mentioning any minimum system version.

Two requirements in one month

This started in October, when the same account posted that GTA 6 would need at least 14.10.00.00. It has now quote-tweeted that post with a new number, 14.22.00.00. That is how GamingBible and FRVR reported the change, both on November 2; GamingBible credits AltChar with spotting it.

Update 26.07-14.22.00 is listed on Sony's official PS5 system software page with a one-line note: “We've made some security fixes to the system software.” Sony doesn't say what was fixed, and GamingBible notes that's standard practice — spelling out the hole would hand a map to the people trying to exploit it. VGTimes reports that 14.22 was not mandatory at release.

On the official list it is the fourth version in the 14.x family, after 14.00, 14.10 and 14.20.

Why Sony is moving fast

The backdrop is a PS5 jailbreak scene that has moved quickly in 2026. Based on VGTimes and HotHardware:

  • The Relapse exploit chain opened consoles on firmware 7.00 through 13.60 and was shut by 14.00. Tom's Hardware flagged the practical catch back then: newer games already demanded 14.00.
  • Next came Overdrive, which offered a PlayStation Store clone with full games for free. It got a cease-and-desist and was gone within 24 hours, per HotHardware.
  • 14.20, released October 21, lasted only hours: researcher kuzi announced a userland entry point running code through Remote Lua Loader. That isn't a full jailbreak — there is no kernel access, and VGTimes says no complete chain for 14.20 has been published.

The sources disagree on one detail. VGTimes describes 14.20 as a security patch that closed a flaw reported by hacker Ark Sama through HackerOne, one that let fake PKG files — pirated games included — run natively. Sony's own 14.20 note, quoted by HotHardware, only mentions improved “messages and usability on some screens.” Both can be true; our read is that it's the same habit of not advertising security fixes.

If your PS5 is up to date

Very little changes. If the console updates automatically, it is probably on 14.22 already or will be well before the 19th. To check, go to Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings.

It's worth doing before November 12, when pre-loading opens for digital buyers (details here). A system update is tiny next to the game itself, which leaked store data put at around 210 GB.

On Xbox Series X|S, nothing similar has come up in the sources we read.

If your PS5 is jailbroken

That's a different story. A jailbroken console has to stay on old firmware, because updating closes the hole that made the jailbreak possible. If GTA 6 really requires 14.22, anyone on 13.60 or lower — or on 14.20 with kuzi's exploit — won't be playing at launch without updating and losing the jailbreak.

GamingBible adds another risk: people playing on jailbroken hardware will likely see their PSN account banned for good, cutting off their entire purchased library. That's the outlet's assessment, not a policy Sony has announced.

In Brazil, where new games are expensive and jailbroken PS5s have a real audience, that matters. As we see it, mandatory recent firmware plus the threat of a ban makes the math easy: buying the game costs less than losing a whole library. A requirement that moved before launch

Lewis White, editor-in-chief of FRVR, called changing a game's minimum firmware before release “rather unprecedented.” He also expects the number to stay put after launch: by then, dumps of the final build will likely exist, so raising the bar again would accomplish little. That's his opinion, and it holds up — the real race runs until November 19.

GamingBible says the jailbreak scene has gone quiet in recent weeks. There's no guarantee that lasts: every new firmware in 2026 has drawn a response within hours or days.

What nobody has confirmed

In the sources we read:

  • Neither Sony nor Rockstar has confirmed the 14.22 requirement, or the earlier 14.10 one.
  • It's unknown what 14.22 fixes, or whether it closes the entry point kuzi found on 14.20.
  • No one has shown what happens in practice if you launch the game on older firmware. A PS5 normally asks you to update before starting a game that needs newer system software, but we haven't seen that tested with GTA 6.
  • It's also unclear whether the requirement could rise again before the 19th.
