In the United States, the two releases ended up one day apart. In Brazil, not even that: The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping opens in Brazilian theaters on November 19, the same Thursday GTA 6 arrives on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. The Brazilian date comes from Ingresso.com, which has been selling advance tickets since October 15, with preview screenings the night before, on the 18th. Paris Filmes is distributing it locally.
Francis Lawrence, who directed nearly every film in the series and is behind this one too, knows who he's sharing the week with. In an interview with IGN, he admitted: "Unfortunately, I think it comes out right around the same time our movie does." Then came the line that made headlines: "Hopefully, people find time for both. Play GTA, go see our movie, play more GTA." (Quotes as reproduced by GTA BOOM and tbreak; the IGN page wouldn't load for us.)
A day earlier there, same day here
The dates look different depending on where you read them. Rolling Stone Brasil, back when the cast was still being announced, listed the film for November 20, 2026 — that's the US opening, a Friday, the usual release day there. Ingresso.com, which actually sells the tickets in Brazil, says November 19. There's no contradiction: Brazilian theaters open new films on Thursdays, so the movie lands there a day before the US. That leaves Brazilian players with the tightest calendar of all:
| Date | GTA 6 | Sunrise on the Reaping |
|---|---|---|
| Nov 12 | Digital preload opens | — |
| Nov 18 | Press reviews, per reported embargo | Preview screenings in Brazil |
| Nov 19 | Launch on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S | Opens in Brazilian theaters |
| Nov 20 | — | Opens in the US |
Rockstar hasn't confirmed the review embargo; that date comes from reports we've already covered. The others are official.
What Lawrence said (and didn't)
The IGN chat was about video games in general, and he leaned in. Per tbreak's summary, Lawrence named Metal Gear Solid, BioShock and Call of Duty among his favorites and recalled being struck by the original 1997 GTA at the time, mostly because of the technology. One fun detail: he said he hasn't played any GTA since the first one. So the director asking for a truce isn't exactly in the game's target audience.
BioShock wasn't a random pick. Lawrence is directing Netflix's BioShock movie, a project that, according to tbreak, first reached him through Gore Verbinski back in 2009, went through Guillermo del Toro, and came back to him nearly two decades later. There's no release date. He's also attached to Red Rising, now at Paramount.
What he didn't do was complain about the date or hint that the studio considered moving the film. In the sources we read, there's no sign Lionsgate ever thought about delaying the release because of GTA 6.
Who's afraid of GTA 6?
Lawrence's comment lands in a debate we've been following. On the games side, Circana analyst Mat Piscatella thinks the fear of launching near GTA 6 is overblown, and some went head-to-head anyway: Goat Simulator 3's expansion launches on the 19th. Film is a different story — the audience doesn't fully overlap, and nobody skips a movie because they bought a game that week.
Our take: that's what makes this interesting. It's rare for the director of a franchise this size to bring up a video game's release date. That Lawrence was asked about it at all — and that his answer bounced around the gaming press for days — says more about GTA 6's weight than about the movie. The box office probably won't feel it anyway: the film has Ralph Fiennes as President Snow and Joseph Zada as young Haymitch, plus Jesse Plemons, Glenn Close, Elle Fanning and Kieran Culkin in the cast listed by Ingresso.com.
The Brazilian casting campaign that wasn't
Anyone who followed pre-production may remember Brazilian fans campaigning for Fernanda Torres, of I'm Still Here, to play Mags. It didn't happen: according to Rolling Stone Brasil, the role went to Lili Taylor, of The Conjuring. Maybe next district.
Doing both in one week
If you plan on both, the math is simple: the film's previews are on the evening of the 18th, and the game unlocks the next day (with times varying by time zone). Movie on Wednesday, the rest of the month in Leonida — roughly the itinerary Lawrence himself suggested.
